Betting on the New Year

ExtZy is a prediction market, harnessing the power of players in the game to identify value in a way that has become known as 'crowd-sourcing'.  According to perhaps the most famous crowd-sourced project - Wikipedia - this process:

"...is a neologism for the act of taking a task traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people, in the form of an open call."

- Wikipedia, 'Crowdsourcing'

The core idea of crowd-sourcing is that a lot of normal individuals working loosely together are smarter or more accurate or more comprehensive than a select number of highly-educated or skilled specialists.  This phenomenon is richly detailed in a book by James Surowiecki  called "The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few", where he lays out the scientific and social basis for the positive effects of 'group-think'.

ExtZy is a tool to facilitate exactly that, allowing a combination of hit-rates on websites, plus a market of individual investment decisions (based on players' personal experiences, knowledge, insights, and expectations) to identify real value in a wide range of content better than any one editor (or stockbroker) could do alone.  So jump in the game, invest in a site that you see growing in the future, place a bet, add a post to the Forum with your thoughts, and help predict what's going to happen in 2009.

Happy New Year from Z/Yen and your Game Lords!
