The top 10 on the Countries Leaderboard by price go as follows:

  1. Australia
  2. Japan
  3. Lebanon
  4. Fiji
  5. Canada
  6. Dominican Republic
  7. Guatemala
  8. Malysia
  9. Netherlands
  10. Haiti

And now let's review the headlines to see if they square up:

  1. Australia has featured constantly in the news over the last few weeks, mostly owing to the drought, British child migrants and more recently an enquiry into Scientology
  2. Afghanistan is on the media's lips - Brown's letter, the policeman who turned on British soldiers, and the election - but not on the leaderboard until 38
  3. Copenhagen - everyone is talking about the imminent Climate talks due to happen in Denmark's capital city in December this year - will they fail or succeed? - but where does this country feature in the Leaderborad? (or is this Community confusing Copenhagen with Amsterdam?)
  4. China and Korea are firm-favourites in the media - especially given that Obama was there this week - but not too hot for the ExtZy Community

The Community has been trading in 1 out of those 5 countries - perhaps crowds aren't quite as wise as Surowiecki thought? Or maybe the ExtZy community is telling us where the real news ought to be - it is certainly interesting that Haiti features in the top 10, seldom makes it into the headlines, but yet is always a center of activity - be it poverty, hurricans or violence. Japan has been in a recession and undergoing cultural shifts for over a decade, but of course it stopped grabbing the headlines years ago. The younger cohorts are no longer making news as the growing number of Neet (Not in Employment, Education or Training) become 'old hat'.

Either way, a satisfactory conclusion to reach here is that all countries are most probably undergoing some news-worthy activity or shift at any point in time, and even if our eyes and ears are never officially told, we probably just go with our human instinct (or which country we would most like to go on holiday next).
